A referral link usually connects a new customer to a provider’s promotion. The useful question is not only what you might receive, but what you must do to qualify and whether the underlying service makes sense for you. This checklist is a way to organize that review; the provider’s terms remain the source of truth.
1. Confirm you are eligible
Start with the offer’s definition of a new customer. A previous account, an existing relationship or a prior promotion may affect eligibility. Look for location, age and account-type restrictions. If a condition is unclear, ask the provider before registering rather than assuming a referral link overrides it.
2. Separate registration from qualification
Opening an account may be only the first step. Read whether the promotion requires identity verification, an initial deposit, a completed transfer, a recurring contribution or another action. Write down the exact requirement and when it must be completed. A promotional headline rarely contains all of these details.
3. Check the timeline
There can be several different dates: the last day to register, the deadline for a qualifying action, a holding period and the time the provider takes to issue a reward. Keep them separate. If you decide to participate, save the terms shown during signup so you can refer to the version that applied to you.
4. Look at costs beyond the reward
Review membership charges, account fees, transfer fees and any product-specific costs. A reward and an ongoing subscription are different things. Ask what the service would cost if you continued using it after the offer. Also consider whether any required balance or holding period fits how you intend to use your money.
5. Understand what you actually receive
Read whether the reward is cash, an investment credit, a selected security or another benefit. Check restrictions on when it can be used, transferred or withdrawn. Avoid treating a maximum advertised value as an amount you are certain to receive. For tax questions, consult the provider’s documents or a qualified professional.
6. Check the destination before entering details
Use an available personal referral link before creating the account, then check the destination and the offer shown by the provider. Shortened links and app redirects can be part of a provider’s process, but you should still confirm where you are entering personal information. This desk never asks for bank credentials or account verification documents.
A card labeled “Coming soon” has no active referral URL. An official-site link is for information and does not stand in for my personal referral.
When in doubt, ask the provider to clarify the condition that matters to you. An offer is only useful when you understand the service and its terms.
